Maume is a relatively small estate in Gevrey-Chambertin, which during the stewardship of Bernard Maume was just under 4 hectares. The property was acquired in 2012 by Moray Tawse whose portfolio also includes holdings in Argentina and Canada. This release hails from Mazis-Chambertin, the northernmost Grand Cru vineyard in the Côte de Nuits, where Maume owns a small plot. 2000 was an attractive vintage of fruit-forward, charming wines which are in their drinking window now.

Vinous
(the vines here are 70 years old, vs. 45 for Maume's Charmes-Chambertin) Full, deep red, the darkest of these 2000s. Perfumed, floral aromas of cherry and raspberry; the freshest of these 2000s. Silky-smooth and fat, with subtle, complex flavors of red fruits, underbrush, leather and game; slightly rustic. Perhaps atypically round and forward for Maume's Mazis, without quite the characteristic grip and delineation of this cuvee Finishes with ripe tannins and very good length. Will be better for a few years of additional cellaring, but seems accessible already. Also tasted: Gevrey-Chambertin Etelois.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2003
