Château Lynch-Bages is one of the finest producers in the Pauillac appellation, known for making wines that combine structure and elegance. Since 1939, the estate has been successfully run by the Cazes family, who also owns other properties in Bordeaux as well as in other regions of France and in Portugal. This release is the 2008 vintage of its grand vin, a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It reveals a stunning ripe fruit profile of dark cherries, plums and blackberries, with a meaty layer and notes of black coffee.

The 2008 Lynch-Bages is deep in color with minor aging on the rim. The nose is well-defined but demands coaxing, almost reluctantly revealing blackberry, briary, tobacco and mint aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but fine tannins, lovely black fruit laced with tobacco and spice, dense and grippy. This is beautifully proportioned on the finish. Superb. Tasted at the Lynch-Bages vertical at the château.

The Modern Pauillac

Situated in the celebrated Pauillac appellation in Bordeaux, Château Lynch Bages uses around 60% of its 100 hectares to produce its first wine (a 5th growth in the 1855 classification) in addition to producing a second red, Echo de Lynch Bages. These wines display superb Cabernet Sauvignon character, together with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot making up the blend. A wonderful example of the power and elegance of truly great Pauillac: gloriously supple and smooth with a tannic backbone.

A white wine, known as Blanc de Lynch Bages, is also produced in very small quantities. Made from an elegant blend of the classic white Bordeaux varietals, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle, the resulting wines display exhilarating freshness and dried apricot complexity.
