Château Smith Haut Lafitte is one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan, which is unrelated to First Growth Château Lafite Rothschild, despite the similarities in the name. They produce six wines from their own estate, which is spread out in a single block on the Graves Günziennes terroir. The 2019 Les Hauts de Smith Blanc is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, aged on the lees for 12 months in oak barrels. Expect notes of pink grapefruit and roasted almonds, leading to a mineral finish.

The 2019 Les Hauts de Smith Blanc made a big impression from barrel. In bottle, it shows wonderful concentration on the nose of Nashi pear, fresh melon and melted candle wax. The palate is beautifully balanced and tensile, with plenty of salinity on the finish. This seems to grow in the glass, so don’t be afraid to give it a short decant. Neal Martin1st February 2022

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
