Les Carmes Haut Brion 2005 is a notable Bordeaux blend from the Pessac-Léognan appellation, crafted by a producer with roots dating back to 1584. This vintage presents complex aromas of blackcurrant, cedar and leather, underpinned by earthy notes and subtle hints of truffle. The tannins are mature but still exhibit some structure, leading to a balanced palate with a medium body. The utilisation of 30% new oak is evident, adding nuances of spice and vanilla. This wine demonstrates a distinct character reflective of the estate`s heritage and meticulous winemaking practices.

Medium red. Ripe aromas of smoky plum, redcurrant, mocha, tobacco and nutty oak. Rich, pliant and fruity, with ripe acids framing the raspberry and subtle game flavors and contributing to the impression of inner-mouth perfume. Offers good volume and a restrained sweetness. Finishes with dusty, serious tannins and very good length.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2008

Some race and savour. Glossy fruit and real succulence. Pretty dry on the finish but not exaggeratedly drying. One can see Graves here thank goodness! Intense and reasonably complex and ambitious for the long term. (JR)
