Château Smith Haut Lafitte – which is unrelated to First Growth Château Lafite Rothschild – is one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Their portfolio includes six wines from their own estate, which is spread out in a single block on the Graves Günziennes terroir. The 2020 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc is a blend of 80% of Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon. Expect a nose of flowers, vanilla, spice, almonds, grapefruit, orange rind and honeysuckle. Rich and creamy, this is ready to be enjoyed now.

The 2020 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc is gorgeous. Rich, effusive and creamy, the 2020 Le Petit Haut Lafitte Blanc is so expressive today. Tropical overtones and a kiss of new French oak are very nicely judged. Passionfruit, mint, orange confit and chamomile are nicely lifted by bright acids that confer energy. A blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon, the 2020 Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc was aged in 50% new oak. White peach, green guava, and lime cordial notes leap from the glass followed by hints of dill seed, almonds, and elderflower. The medium-bodied palate is chock full of stone fruit and citrus flavors, featuring a lively backbone and spicy lift on the finish.Lisa Perrotti-Brown12th March 2023

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
