Krug is arguably the most stylish and luxurious champagne house there is. The maison was originally established by German born Joseph Krug, who cut his teeth working for Jacquesson Champagne. Now owned by the LVMH Group since 1999, Krug is well-known for producing cuvées that are rich, complex and built to last.

Krug 2008 is produced from a blend of 53% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier and 22% Chardonnay, with 12 years ageing in the cellars. Intense and golden in the glass, expressive on the nose with rich aromas of honey, liquorice, menthol, orange peel and grapefruit. Complex on the palate with notes of quince, candied fruits, citrus, floral and buttery cookie character.

The 2008 Vintage is an infant. Tightly wound and vibrant, the 2008 still needs time. Today, bright acids dominate. I wouldn't dream of touching this anytime soon, as the 2008 remains embryonic, although from time to time the barest hints of signature Krug notes peek out from the wine's structure. Vibrant saline notes and sculpted fruit are the signatures of a cold, late-ripening year that produced classically austere Champagnes. Disgorged: Autumn 2019. From the classic Champagne vintage, the KRUG 2008 is a 53% Pinot Noir, 22% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Meunier possessing enormous tension and freshness with aromas warm lemon curd, crème brulé, and toast. A beautiful golden color, the medium to full-bodied palate is intense with spiced apple, butter biscuit, and a touch lemon zest bitterness that folds seamlessly into a satiny acid vibrancy laced with chalk. It is at once powerful and delicate throughout and finishes very long. According to the Krug iD320023 the bottle tasted was disgorged in the third quarter of 2020. 97 12.5% Drink now - 2038Sarah Mayo8th November 2023

Since I reviewed the Krug 2008 Brut last year, I have drunk the wine on five or six occasions, but I still struggle to understand it. This bottle, tasted at the cellars in Reims, was among the best I`ve encountered to date; but between the chiseled muscularity of the Clos du Mesnil and the complexity and plenitude of the 164ème Édition of Grande Cuvée, the vintage itself simply seems less compelling and complete. Offering up aromas of citrus oil, freshly baked bread, orange zest, dried white flowers and a discreet hint of buttered toast, it`s medium to full-bodied, racy and saline, with a pretty pinpoint mousse and a tightly wound core. Will it unfurl with time to reveal more mid-palate volume and authority, or will it remain a comparatively lean, understated vintage for Krug? As ever, time will tell, and given the house`s track record I certainly wouldn`t be surprised to see the 2008 take flight with more time on cork.

Elegant Luxury

A Champagne house that needs no introduction. Founded by Johann Krug in Reims in 1843, this celebrated Maison specialises in prestige cuvées, including the multi-vintage flagship Grande Cuvée as well as the glorious Krug Clos d'Ambonnay, made exclusively from Pinot Noir. Another highlight is the highly coveted Clos du Mesnil - a rare Blanc de Blancs produced only in exceptional years from a single, tiny 1.84ha plot of Chardonnay grapes in the heart of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Krug has been owned by LVMH since 1999.

While Krug's excellent Grande Cuvée and Rosé have historically been released as multi-vintage blends with no indication of year, the team have now started including edition numbers so consumers can easily discover the age and provenance of the base wines used in the blend.
