Insignia is the flagship wine from the legendary family-owned and run Joseph Phelps Vineyards winery in California. The 2000 vintage is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot with support from small portions of Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. It is concentrated and dark with ample black fruit, cinnamon, tobacco and graphite. With 20 years of bottle age it is now supple and rounded with a long, spice-infused finish.

Bright, dark red. Cool, rather withdrawn aromas of cassis, dusty herbs, tobacco leaf and cocoa powder, with hints of tomato leaf and olive. Juicy and penetrating, showing good herbal lift but only modest flesh and sweetness to its cassis and graphite flavors. Finishes a touch sour, with firm, slightly dry-edged tannins and a rustic hint of maple syrup. Probably going nowhere. I find the 1998 a bit sweeter, with finer-grained tannins.Stephen Tanzer1st April 2016

Innovation and Quality in Napa

Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.

The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
