The 2008 Joseph Phelps Insignia is crafted from a meticulously selected blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot. Sourced from renowned vineyards across Napa Valley, including Phelps` estate in St Helena, this wine underwent 24 months of maturation in 100% new French oak barrels. The 2008 growing season faced challenges, with spring frosts and a cooler summer contributing to lower yields, thereby enhancing the concentration of flavours in the grapes. Joseph Phelps Vineyards, established in 1973, remains a significant player in premium California wine.

(from a vintage featuring a long, cold spring and damaging April frost; a series of heat spikes; and a drawn-out harvest under good conditions): Bright full ruby. Aromas of blackberry pie, flowers, mocha and truffley earth, along with a sexy leesy nuance. Juicy and intense; quite closed in on itself in spite of its sweetness. The wine's thickness of dark berry fruit is leavened by bright acidity and floral lift. This impressively dense, slowly evolving wine finishes with a powerful spine of toothcoating tannins. Built for a long life in bottle.Stephen Tanzer1st April 2016

Dark bright crimson. Big and brawny, almost leathery. I think I might guess Syrah blind. Savoury and yet with more obvious fruit than the 2008. Alcohol fairly well managed. But a bit grainy, those tannins. Slightly inky finish. (JR)

Innovation and Quality in Napa

Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.

The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
