Joseph Phelps Backus 2004 is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon red wine from the Napa Valley of California. Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Backus is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the red soils of the Oakville Corridor and eastern hillsides overlooking Screaming Eagle and Rudd Estate. On the 2004. "The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard, from a steep hillside site in the low end of the Vaca mountains, across from Rudd Vineyards and Screaming Eagle, boasts an inky/purple colour along with remarkably sweet tannins, especially for Backus, which tends to be a forbiddingly backward style of Cabernet. It possesses broad, expansive flavours, an opulent, full-bodied palate and unreal length. One of the superstars of the vintage..." Robert Parker, 2014

- Deep ruby. Inviting nose combines black cherry, licorice, tar, mocha and lead pencil. Lush, silky and compellingly sweet, with harmonious acidity for the year. Classic currant and cedar flavors are broad and thoroughly ripe without going over the top. Huge but shapely wine, finishing with captivating sweetness and noble tannins. A great vintage for this property. This was bottled in December of 2006, a bit earlier than recent vintages and obviously a good idea.

Innovation and Quality in Napa

Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is family-owned winery celebrated for its commitment to crafting world-class, estate grown wines from Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Joe Phelps was a building contractor from Colorado who began investing in Napa Valley vineyards in the early 1970s, producing the first vintage of his now-famous "Insignia" in 1974 - one of the first super premium Bordeaux blends from Napa.

The current winemaker is Ashley Hepworth, who initially joined Joseph Phelps in 1999 as an intern. Alongside Insignia, Ashley and the team also make a number of varietal wines with the Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay being a notable high point.
