Château Haut-Brion 2004 is a mature Merlot-based red wine from the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux. Château Haut-Brion was awarded First Growth status in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux and is undoubtedly among the very finest producers in Bordeaux, if not the world. The 2004 Grand Vin is a blend of 61% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Cabernet Franc, with just over half of the property`s yield for the vintage used for the cuvée. "It has been a few years since I last tasted the 2004 Haut-Brion. Now at 12 years of age, it retains its deep colour. The bouquet is `pleasant` if not as complex as the 2004 Latour, yet it`s possibly just biding its time as it gradually opens with black fruit, black olive, even a touch of mint that might dupe you into thinking Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied and very harmonious, almost caressing thanks to the Merlot lending that velvety texture. The second half changes tack, the Cabernet nudging the Merlot off the stage and delivering a more structured, possibly foursquare finish that is linear and correct. It is an excellent wine for the vintage although it will always be overshadowed by the 2005 inter alia. Maybe more personality just needs to develop?" Wine Advocate, 2017

The 2004 Haut-Brion has a superb bouquet with very well-defined blackberry, cedar, cigar humidor and dried blood scents that blossom in the glass - quintessential Haut-Brion. The palate is medium-bodied with an almost medicinal entry and fine acidity. It's the eucalyptus aspect that really defines the finish, something that I was not expecting. Does that detract from typicité? Maybe, yet still very enjoyable. Neal Martin6th June 2024

The dark plum/ruby-hued 2004 Haut-Brion exhibits a noble, discreet, smoky bouquet revealing notions of plum liqueur, black currants, sweet cherries, and subtle earth. In addition to its aromatic complexity, this medium-bodied effort reveals classic elegance and delicacy as well as sweet fruit in the mouth and a long finish. Give this streamlined, civilized wine 2-4 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 20-25 years. It is amazingly similar to Haut-Brion’s 1999.Robert Parker29th June 2007

Pessac Leognan's Only First Growth

Grapes are thought to have been grown on the Haut-Brion estate in Pessac-Léognan since the Roman era, while the first recorded mention of the property is in 1423. The wine has had a long, illustrious history and is famously mentioned by Samuel Pepys in his diary of 1663. Nowadays, Haut Brion is considered by many to be one of the finest wines in the world and was ranked in the First Growth category during the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines.

Renowned for its first wine (40% of production), Haut Brion, the estate also produces a spectacular second wine from young vines, Le Clarence de Haut Brion, in addition to a white, Château Haut-Brion Blanc, the Clarendelle branded wines and a second white, La Clarté de Haut Brion (which also takes grapes from La Mission). Spanning 53 hectare, the estate is planted to 50 hectares red varieties and 3 hectares white. The reds produced are beautifully balanced and complex, often around 14% abv and made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, typically aged in 80% new oak. The Haut-Brion Blanc meanwhile is a Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc blend, produced in small quantities and aged in a mix of new and one-year oak.
