Haut Bailly 2004 showcases a deep garnet hue, revealing its age while hinting at its structured core. On the nose, it presents an intricate blend of dark berries, cedar, and subtle earthy undertones. The palate offers a composed balance of cherry, plum, and hints of tobacco, accompanied by well-integrated tannins that provide a solid grip. The acidity brings freshness, ensuring the wine`s longevity while inviting further exploration.

Haut Bailly, located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, is renowned for its rich history and craftsmanship. The estate`s vineyards benefit from a mix of gravel and clay soils, with a significant portion of Cabernet Sauvignon contributing to its character. The 2004 vintage was marked by a warm growing season, with fruit picked at perfect ripeness, leading to a wine that blends elegance with depth. This vintage reflects the estate`s commitment to tradition and quality.

Dark plum in colour, edges of floral violet and peony as in the 1998 and the 2001, finessed, drawn out. Cool blue and black fruits, elegant and balanced, edges of graphite and flint, love it. Now switching over into its full drinking window, after 20 years of being just a little reserved. Veronique Sanders director, Denis Dubourdieu consultant. A real standout, one to savour. Harvest September 27 to October 18. 50% new oak.Jane Anson11th September 2024

Plum, redcurrant, mocha, tobacco, licorice, minerals and a gravelly note on the nose, along with some nutty oak. Supple and fruity, with an impression of strong acidity for the year and plenty of underlying minerality. This shows less density and structure than the 2006 but possesses excellent fruit for the year. Ripe enough but quite dry. This appears to be in the process of shutting down now.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2007
