Domaine de Chevalier makes some of the most revered red and white wines in Pessac-Léognan. The vineyards sit on gentle slopes within a forest clearing and are carefully managed using biodynamic farming principles. At nearly 40 years old, the 1982 vintage is perfectly mature. The wine has a complex nose, with notes of forest floor, smoke, tobacco, cedar, dried flowers and mushrooms. The palate carries hints of leather, spices and black pepper, all of which is neatly integrated.

The 1982 Domaine de Chevalier comes across candied on the nose with inkwell scents infusing the red fruit, intense but not complex. A touch of fresh tobacco emerges with time. The palate has a pastille-like entry, with desiccated orange peel, kirsch, Morello cherries and none of the herbaceousness it apparently showed in its youth. Doubtless, this wine, made a year before Olivier Bernard took the helm, could have been better. But it's no abject failure. Graves' Hidden Secret

An illustrious Grand Cru Classé de Graves estate situated in the appellation of Pessac-Léognan. Producing superbly balanced and long-lived reds and white wines, the estate has been in the hands of the Bernard family since 1983.

In addition to its highly renowned first wine, the domaine also produces a second wine from young vines, L’Esprit de Chevalier, and small amounts of a third wine, Pessac-Léognan de Domaine de Chevalier. Key varieties include the traditional Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon for whites.
