Corton-Charlemagne Bonneau du Martray 2009 is a Grand Cru Chardonnay from the Côte de Beaune. This half bottle originates from a single 9.5-hectare parcel on the high slopes of the Corton hill where the limestone soil contains a high proportion of marl. Aromas of baked apple, lemon curd and toasted hazelnuts lead into a concentrated palate defined by a broad, coating texture. The flinty mineral edge of the estate remains the defining feature, providing a structural counterpoint to the ripe fruit.

I thought the 2009 Corton-Charlemagne from Bonneau du Martray was simply brilliant. Perhaps it was the magnum format, but the 2009 was fabulous, with all of the signature mineral, slate and citrus notes given a little extra richness by the warmth of the year. What a gorgeous wine. This particular bottle had been decanted three times but was still too reduced to enjoy properly. There is obviously lots of fruit and integrity buried in there but heaven knows when it will truly express itself. (JR)Jancis Robinson4th November 2013
