Bonneau du Martray is a unique wine producer based in Pernand-Vergelesses. It is the only Burgundian estate to solely make grand cru wines, Corton and Corton-Charlemagne. In 2017, the domaine was sold to American businessman Stanley Kroenke, who also owns Screaming Eagle in Napa Valley. The 2004 vintage is expressive and complex, revealing aromas of green apples, white flowers, citrus, wood, minerals and sea air. The palate is intense, with an oily mouthfeel and persistent finish.

The 2004 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru from Domaine Bonneau du Martray is served blind in Bordeaux rather than Burgundy. There is a slight dustiness on the nose, a common trait amongst red and whites in this vintage, what evolves into a rather vegetal tincture. The palate is medium-bodied with an unmistakable greenness that knocks this off balance. It would appears that nobody was immune to this vegetal element and because of this, I asked whether it came from the ’04 vintage before its identity was revealed. Neal Martin6th June 2024
