Henri Bonneau, a highly praised Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer who passed away in 2016, came from a family with a rich history in the southern Rhône. As the twelfth-generation winemaker, he left a significant mark. The current estate encompasses 6 hectares of vineyards in various Châteauneuf-du-Pape locations, including the esteemed La Crau plot. The domain produces three distinct cuvées – a straightforward Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Cuvée Marie Beurrier, and the top-tier Réserve des Célistins. The defining characteristic of the 2003 vintage was the scorching heatwave that swept through Europe. A touch of light rain toward the end of September likely gave the Southern Rhône a slight advantage over the Northern Rhône.

Full ruby. Complex aromas of dried red fruits and herbs, heightened by a licorice note and a hint of cracked pepper. A sweet, palate-caressing wine for Bonneau, offering sweet raspberry and cherry flavors and a supple texture. Open-knit and easy to drink now, this wine shows none of the warm, liqueur-like qualities that mark so many wines from the vintage. Finishes with very good clarity and spicy persistence. I have been overestimating this wine, it seems.Josh Raynolds1st March 2011
