Clos Saint Jean is run by brothers Vincent and Pascal Maurel and is considered amongst the very finest estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. La Combe de Fous translates as ‘the hill of the fool’ and is a reference to their great-great-grandfather, Edmund Tacussel, who in 1905 planted Grenache vines in one of the hilliest and most inhospitably stoney sections of the iconic Le Crau sub-region. It is this ancient-vine fruit that forms the backbone to this cuvée, a remarkably rich yet velvety wine that rides the perfect line between immense power and beguiling elegance. 2007 was an incredible vintage in the southern Rhône and this has twice been awarded a perfect 100-point score by The Wine Advocate.
