Domaine Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras is a Premier Cru red Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits. This parcel is situated on a steep, south-facing slope with very stony, white marl soils that impart a rigorous structural core. Christophe Roumier uses about 20% whole-cluster fermentation and limited new oak to allow the site’s mineral tension to lead. The 2008 vintage is prized by enthusiasts for its transparency and high-definition acidity. It presents a more muscular, brooding version of Chambolle-Musigny compared to those from the flatter, siltier parts of the village.

The 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is fragrant on the nose with cranberry and red plum, lots of tertiary elements and an unanticipated scent of star anis with aeration. The palate is very well-defined with fine tannins, no signs of leafiness that I noticed on other Côte de Nuits 2008s recently and harmonious with a pretty finish that arguably just misses a little balance. Probably at its peak now. Tasted blind at the Roumier Les Cras vertical at Medlar, London.Neal Martin10th November 2022

Domaine Georges Roumier

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
