The Bourgogne Rouge Georges Roumier 2018 is a sought-after Burgundy red wine using grapes sourced from multiple plots within Chambolle-Musigny. This vintage showcases the domaine`s commitment to rigorous terroir expression under the guidance of Christophe Roumier. Grapes are sourced from lower slope parcels. The wine offers a blend of red and black cherry notes, complemented by subtle hints of earth and spice. Georges Roumier, a revered name in Burgundy, has been producing wine since the 1920s, fostering a legacy focused on quality and tradition.

Roumier produced eight barrels of the 2018 Bourgogne Pinot Noir, amounting to a yield of some 35 hectoliters per hectare, and he observes with some justice that these 60-year-old vines in Gilly-lès-Cîteaux produce an "haute couture" example of generic Bourgogne. Bursting with aromas of cherries, red berries, dried flowers and sweet soil tones, the wine is medium to full-bodied, pure and racy, with a generous core of fruit, powdery tannins, and an elegantly chalky finish. Expect it to land at the upper end of my bracketed score. - William Kelley

One new barrel out of eight. Destemmed. Lower slopes of Chambolle. Barrel sample.Deep crimson with purple cast. Rich in deep cherry fruit, ripe but perfectly fresh. Chewy and generous yet super-fresh with lots of matière. The wine is at a lovely moment now, thinks Christophe Roumier, so he wants to ‘catch it’ by bottling it soon. Intense and deep fruited but so, so generous, crunchy fruit. Terrific Bourgogne. (JH)

The 2018 Bourgogne Pinot Noir, which is completely de-stemmed, offers pretty blueberry and raspberry fruit on the refined nose – pretty and playful. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins. There is a sharpness here, and a citric finish. Fine. Neal Martin1st January 2020

Domaine Georges Roumier

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
