This is an exceptionally crafted champagne that perfect illustrates the evolution of reserve wines over time. Each year, a meticulous selection of the finest wines capable of ageing, originating from various vineyard plots with shallow, chalky soils, is introduced into a `réserve perpétuelle` [500 and 600-liter barrels] initiated back in 1985. In December 2017, approximately two-thirds of the solera was bottled [leaving the remainder for blending with the young wines of the year], and then the wine aged `sur lattes` for 36 months before disgorgement. Reflet D`Antan offers remarkable complexity with hints of dried fruits, green almonds, and Manuka honey, while the mouthfeel, rich in umami, concludes with a lingering, chalky bitterness.

The NV Reflet d'Antan, base 2017, is outrageously beautiful. Creamy and expansive, the 2017 offers up a compelling mix of orchard fruit, orange peel, spice and tangerine oil. As always, Reflet d'Antan is a solera-style blend that includes 25% reserve wine back to 1982. That combination yields a Champagne endowed with tons of nuance and complexity. This is the first time Reflet d'Antan will be released only in magnums. Readers should be prepared for much higher pricing on this wine, which the Bérêche brothers explain as necessary in order to make investments in quality across their operation.Antonio Galloni1st May 2023

Bereche’s NV Brut Reflets d’Antan Disg. 10/2012 represents the latest installment of a singular bottling whose origin is a solera-like, annually renewed blend of equal parts Chardonnay, Meunier and Pinot, held in (hence, rotated through) demi-muids, and begun nearly two decades ago. This is truly a revelation of what Champagne can be! (Not that one would want all Champagne to be like this.) The intensely pungent aromas of green herbs, toasted nuts, and bittersweet floral perfumes are head-turning – yet so variegated and at the same time elusive that I won’t try to name even some of them. The correspondingly multi-faceted effect on a silken palate is at once piquantly oxidative and coolingly, even refreshingly green herbal and juicily citric. This finishes with awesome persistence and penetration, a wine that you can shake your head over in delighted contemplation for hours, and which will prove terrifically versatile at table. And incidentally, there’s no sense of austerity or (too-)obvious dryness here, thanks to some 5-6 grams of residual sugar. What will become of this in bottle – and how quickly – I wouldn’t pretend myself capable of predicting; but I am confident it will continue to mesmerize and delight for at least several more years. - David Schildknecht

Crafting Sparkling Elegance

Bérèche et Fils has a long history in Reims, having been established in Craon de Ludes in 1847. However it was not until brothers Vincent and Raphaël Bérêche took over the management of the house in 2004 that its reputation began to soar. Their dedicated and at times innovative work has ensured that Champagne Bérêche is one of the most talked about grower-producers in the region.

Vincent and Raphaël source exclusively organically farmed fruit mainly from their home terroir in the 1er Cru Ludes, along with Ormes (Petite Montagne) and Mareuil-le-Port (Vallée de la Marne), as well as isolated parcels in Trépail, Rilly-la-Montagne, and Chigny-les-Roses, and the Grand Crus of Mailly, Ambonnay and Aÿ. From a total of 20 parcels the brothers produce a total of nine Champagnes and one still Coteaux Champenois.

Grapes are hand harvested on a plot by plot basis and each vineyard parcel is vinified and aged individually. In the cellar, extended oak ageing and cork closures are employed to add depth and flavour to the wines. The house style is complex, concentrated and textured, yet with a precision and laser focus. In 2013, the brothers also launched a mini-project (now ended) called Raphaël & Vincent Bérêche Crus Sélectionnés, through which they bought wines from top 1er and Grand Cru growers and experimented with extended ageing 'sur lattes’.
