Innovative, curiosity-driven work has ensured that Champagne Bérêche is one of the most talked about producers in the region. The superb Brut Réserve is a roughly one-third-each blend of the three major varieties with a healthy proportion of reserve wines. A pure expression of the domaine’s terroirs and demonstrates harmony, verve and no shortage of winemaking skill.

The NV Brut Réserve is the foundational wine at Bérêche, and the latest release is based on the 2022 vintage, incorporating a 40% perpetual reserve component, uniting the freshness of the northern slopes and the maturity of the hot, dry vintage. Fruit for this wine comes from vineyard sites across the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de Marne, and the Champagne was disgorged in October 2024 with six grams per liter dosage. Bursting from the glass with aromas of nectarine, orange zest and brioche, it`s medium- to full-bodied and ample, with considerable density, underpinned by racy acidity and concluding with a chalky finish. The Brut Réserve has seen the most refinements in recent years as it no longer incorporates tailles and now features Chardonnay from Trépail; technically, this means that the pH is lower and the acidity is higher. It’s one of the most reliable entry-level NV bottlings on the market. - Kristaps Karklins

The NV Brut Réserve (base 2022) is such a classy wine. This release, based on 2022, is all finesse. Cranberry, mint, white pepper, slate and dried flowers all grace the palate. Stylistically, the Brut Réserve has evolved into a more refined Champagne than what was the norm just a few years ago. The one thing that is evident, though, is a slightly harder texture vis-à-vis the other wines in the range, likely because of aging on crown cap rather than cork. Élevage was done 70% in cask and 30% in tank. Dosage is 5.2 grams per liter.

Récoltant Manipulant Ludes.2004 with 30% reserve all three grapes. Dosage 1.5 g/l. No MLF, 36 mths bottle age – disgorged 4 Nov 2007.Really quite rich on the nose and then very fine, refined aromas. Very fresh indeed. Positive and firm. I’d keep this a little longer. Should be drinking really well by summer but the acid is pretty dominant at the moment. (JR)

Crafting Sparkling Elegance

Bérèche et Fils has a long history in Reims, having been established in Craon de Ludes in 1847. However it was not until brothers Vincent and Raphaël Bérêche took over the management of the house in 2004 that its reputation began to soar. Their dedicated and at times innovative work has ensured that Champagne Bérêche is one of the most talked about grower-producers in the region.

Vincent and Raphaël source exclusively organically farmed fruit mainly from their home terroir in the 1er Cru Ludes, along with Ormes (Petite Montagne) and Mareuil-le-Port (Vallée de la Marne), as well as isolated parcels in Trépail, Rilly-la-Montagne, and Chigny-les-Roses, and the Grand Crus of Mailly, Ambonnay and Aÿ. From a total of 20 parcels the brothers produce a total of nine Champagnes and one still Coteaux Champenois.

Grapes are hand harvested on a plot by plot basis and each vineyard parcel is vinified and aged individually. In the cellar, extended oak ageing and cork closures are employed to add depth and flavour to the wines. The house style is complex, concentrated and textured, yet with a precision and laser focus. In 2013, the brothers also launched a mini-project (now ended) called Raphaël & Vincent Bérêche Crus Sélectionnés, through which they bought wines from top 1er and Grand Cru growers and experimented with extended ageing 'sur lattes’.
