Château d’Yquem is often considered as the greatest sweet wine producer in the world, however, they also make a fine dry white known as Ygrec de Yquem. This is a deliciously intriguing wine composed of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon only produced in certain years when the conditions permit. Fully mature now this displays dried lemon and orange peel, roasted almonds and hazelnuts with a lovely waxy mouthfeel.

Winemaker Sandrine Garbay told me that for the 2000 Y de Yquem, the 50% Sémillon was picked with intentional over-ripeness and just a touch of botrytis. It has a fine, slightly nutty bouquet that is curiously quite Burgundian in style. Lovely balance on the palate, it offers dried honey, white tea and an Alsace-like personality. Just a touch of oxidation here, very focused with a tang of lemongrass on the finish. Very fine. Neal Martin1st April 2022
