Bright, dark red. Reduced, very smoky aromas of dark cherry, raspberry and minerals. Tactile, concentrated and classically dry, conveying a strong, chewy impression of dry extract. Not yet as fat or complex as the last three samples but this is quite backward today. Finishes with building tannins and resounding oaky length, with a late hint of orange zest providing lift. Very hard to judge in its present form, but Sebastian Cathiard notes that this wine will not be bottled before April. My projected range may turn out to be overly conservative.Stephen Tanzer1st January 2014

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

This small, family run domaine was first established in the commune of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy by Sylvain Cathiard’s grandfather. Since 2011, following the retirement of Sylvain, the domaine has been run by Sylvain's son, Sébastien Cathiard. Famed for the superb quality Pinot Noir it produces, the domaine has vineyard holdings across Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-St-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, in addition to tiny holdings in Clos Vougeot and Romanée-St-Vivant.

In the words of esteemed critic, Neal Martin, "“Do I need to tell you how much I adore Sylvain Cathiard’s wines? This is a seriously good quality producer of Vosne-Romanée, one whose star is in the ascendant. These are gloriously silky smooth, complex wines; not just with the top Premier Crus but down to the generic Burgundy. It’s the intensity and focus that set Cathiard apart, wines with supreme definition and purity that seduce the palate like a beautiful courtesan. I would love to taste his Grand Crus, but they are incredibly rare and sought-after. This producer comes highly recommended from top to bottom.”
