Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 2009 is a 1er Cru Burgundy Pinot Noir from the hallowed Vosne-Romanée appellation of the Côte de Nuits. The 1er Cru vineyard of Malconsorts is located on the border with Nuits-St-Georges, and immediately adjacent to La Tâche. In good vintages, it is considered by many Burgundy lovers to be a Grand Cru in all but name. "Tasted out of barrel at the domaine. As usual, the nose is more closed and introverted than the other Vosne Premier Crus, but it reluctantly unfurls to reveal darker, more broody fruit with hints of violet. The palate is very structured, more stoic but with great breeding. This is a long-term wine that may not show its true colours for several years, but once again there is great mineralité showing on the long, persistent finish. Intuition tells me that this may eventually surpass the RSV." Wine Advocate, 2011

The 2009 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has a very lively, floral bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, incense and iris flower. Fine delineation. The palate is surprisingly tannic and backward, quite an "insolent" Malconsorts, solid and missing a bit of Pinoté toward the finish. I have encountered other Cathiard wines with more charm. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune. Neal Martin1st March 2023

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

This small, family run domaine was first established in the commune of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy by Sylvain Cathiard’s grandfather. Since 2011, following the retirement of Sylvain, the domaine has been run by Sylvain's son, Sébastien Cathiard. Famed for the superb quality Pinot Noir it produces, the domaine has vineyard holdings across Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-St-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, in addition to tiny holdings in Clos Vougeot and Romanée-St-Vivant.

In the words of esteemed critic, Neal Martin, "“Do I need to tell you how much I adore Sylvain Cathiard’s wines? This is a seriously good quality producer of Vosne-Romanée, one whose star is in the ascendant. These are gloriously silky smooth, complex wines; not just with the top Premier Crus but down to the generic Burgundy. It’s the intensity and focus that set Cathiard apart, wines with supreme definition and purity that seduce the palate like a beautiful courtesan. I would love to taste his Grand Crus, but they are incredibly rare and sought-after. This producer comes highly recommended from top to bottom.”
