Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a leading wine producer based in Meursault, where it has holdings in some of the most prestigious vineyards. The estate is currently led by fourth-generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid-1980s. This bottle comes from the Premier Cru of Santenots du Milieu in the Volnay commune of the Côte de Beaune. Renowned for its perfumed and smooth-yet-structured Pinot Noirs, Volnay is located between Pommard and Meursault in the Côte de Beaune. Les Santenots is one of the most highly regarded 1er Cru’s within the appellation, in which Comtes Lafon owns a substantial 4ha of vines.

This magnum format allows for slower maturation, potentially enhancing the complexity over time.

The 2005 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-du-Milieu from Comtes Lafon is superb. Having recently tasted the 2009, 2010 and 2011, I am curious to see where the 2005 is. Still a big, broad-shouldered wine, the 2005 is beautiful, open and expressive on this night. The wine's breadth and pure power are both impressive. At the same time, slightly angular contours and drying tannins, especially on the finish, are impossible to escape. The 2005 remains a striking Santenots, but it is also a bit burly. I don't see the 2005 ever becoming one of the more polished vintages, but would also like to taste it in another 5 years to see if it has acquired a measure of elegance that today is elusive.

A Singular Vision

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is widely considered to produce some of the world's greatest Chardonnay. Currently managed by fourth generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid 1980s, Comtes Lafon own and source fruit from many of the greatest cru in the region - including Charmes, Clos de la Barre and Montrachet.

Dominique pursued a policy of converting all vineyards under Comtes Lafon's stewardship over to traditional farming methods - moving first to fully organic in 1995 and on to biodynamic in 1998. The average age of vines is around 40 years with yields kept low to ensure quality. Alongside his world class Chardonnay, Dominique also produces Premier Cru Volnay in limited quantities - a relatively new addition to the winery's portfolio, they are swiftly gaining a cult following.
