Dominique Lafon`s 2014 Santenots du Milieu is a Premier Cru red Burgundy from the Volnay appellation (though anomalously located in the commune of Meursault). This vintage deliveres a focused beam of redcurrant and violet underpinned by a stony mineral core. The wine possesses a firm backbone and a silky texture. The fruit remains vibrant while starting to reveal subtle layers of earth and forest floor. It represents a precise expression of the vineyard, prioritising freshness and clarity over raw power.
93 Vinous
(13% alcohol; less than 20 hectoliters per hectare produced): Good bright red. Pretty aromas of dark cherry, menthol and dark chocolate. Rich, broad, ripe and dry; more mouthfilling than the foregoing samples but still with a light touch. (The pH here is 3.4, but Lafon noted that the '15s have lower pHs and higher acidity.) Lovely depth to the fruit, spice and soil tones. Finishes very long, with refined tannins, superb energy and excellent balance. This will probably be accessible relatively early, like the Monthélie.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2017

Lots of fruity charm and life. Racy and with lots of fruity finesse. Bitter cherries and a taffeta texture. Not concentrated but very well balanced. (JR)

A Singular Vision

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is widely considered to produce some of the world's greatest Chardonnay. Currently managed by fourth generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid 1980s, Comtes Lafon own and source fruit from many of the greatest cru in the region - including Charmes, Clos de la Barre and Montrachet.

Dominique pursued a policy of converting all vineyards under Comtes Lafon's stewardship over to traditional farming methods - moving first to fully organic in 1995 and on to biodynamic in 1998. The average age of vines is around 40 years with yields kept low to ensure quality. Alongside his world class Chardonnay, Dominique also produces Premier Cru Volnay in limited quantities - a relatively new addition to the winery's portfolio, they are swiftly gaining a cult following.
