Volnay Santenots du Milieu Comtes Lafon 2012 is a Premier Cru red Burgundy from the Volnay appellation (though anomalously located in the commune of Meursault). The wine is defined by its deep, dark fruit profile and substantial tannic structure. Notes of blackberry, liquorice and woodsmoke dominate the aromatic profile. Despite the power of the 2012 fruit, the wine maintains a racy energy and a persistent mineral finish. The clay-heavy terroir of Santenots du Milieu provides a muscular framework that has allowed the wine to age gracefully. It is a dense and impactful Volnay that requires aeration to reveal its full aromatic spectrum.
91 Vinous
(production of 16 hectoliters per hectare): Deep red-ruby color. Aromas of black cherry, animal fur and dark chocolate. Very rich and classically dry, offering a suaver, finer-grained texture than the Champans. Shows a slightly roasted quality to its dark fruit flavors along with complicating notes of spices and espresso. Here the tannins are dusty and substantial but mellow.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2015

A Singular Vision

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is widely considered to produce some of the world's greatest Chardonnay. Currently managed by fourth generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid 1980s, Comtes Lafon own and source fruit from many of the greatest cru in the region - including Charmes, Clos de la Barre and Montrachet.

Dominique pursued a policy of converting all vineyards under Comtes Lafon's stewardship over to traditional farming methods - moving first to fully organic in 1995 and on to biodynamic in 1998. The average age of vines is around 40 years with yields kept low to ensure quality. Alongside his world class Chardonnay, Dominique also produces Premier Cru Volnay in limited quantities - a relatively new addition to the winery's portfolio, they are swiftly gaining a cult following.
