Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu 2010 is a mature 1er Cru Burgundy Pinot Noir from the Côte de Beaune. This wine is produced from 40+ year-old Pinot Noir vines planted in shallow clay soil sitting on a bed of solid rock and delivers the classic smooth yet structured `iron fist in a velvet glove` experience. "The 2010 Volnay Santenots is pure silk on the palate. It reveals striking suppleness and mid-palate pliancy in its expressive red berries, plums, flowers and liquorice. This is an inviting, totally alluring wine graced with tons of sheer sexiness. A voluptuous, creamy finish takes things to their logical conclusion. There are no hard edges in this exceptionally elegant, polished Volnay." Wine Advocate, 2012

Saturated red-ruby. Briary dark and red berries are complicated by chocolate and smoky soil tones on the nose. Hugely rich, creamy and seamless, with wild small red berries and smoke dominating. Excellent balance and breed here; ethereal but at the same time sharply delineated. Rich, smooth tannins come on late and are thoroughly buffered by the wine's fruit.

A Singular Vision

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is widely considered to produce some of the world's greatest Chardonnay. Currently managed by fourth generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid 1980s, Comtes Lafon own and source fruit from many of the greatest cru in the region - including Charmes, Clos de la Barre and Montrachet.

Dominique pursued a policy of converting all vineyards under Comtes Lafon's stewardship over to traditional farming methods - moving first to fully organic in 1995 and on to biodynamic in 1998. The average age of vines is around 40 years with yields kept low to ensure quality. Alongside his world class Chardonnay, Dominique also produces Premier Cru Volnay in limited quantities - a relatively new addition to the winery's portfolio, they are swiftly gaining a cult following.
