Comtes Lafon Volnay Santenots du Milieu 2002 is a medium-bodied Burgundy red wine from the Premier Cru climat of Santenots du Milieu in the Volnay commune of the Côte de Beaune. Renowned for its perfumed and smooth-yet-structured Pinot Noirs, Volnay is located between Pommard and Meursault in the Côte de Beaune. Les Santenots is one of the most highly regarded 1er Cru climats within the appellation, in which Comtes Lafon owns a substantial 4ha of vines. "Clear mid purple – how would you know this was 20 years old? Still so youthful. A huge wealth on the palate, with quite fresh acidity. No signs of evolution, so in one sense a lack of generosity. See what it is like with more air. The fruit builds and develops steadily." Jasper Morris MW, 2022

Medium red, showing almost no amber. Aromas of redcurrant, licorice, mocha and spices; nothing tertiary going on here yet. Still quite youthful and firm in the mouth, even a bit tight, showing lovely energy to the berry and licorice flavors. Creamy yet weightless wine with refined tannins and very good length. Still evolving. Lafon noted that this wine closed up a year after it was bottled and remained tight until barely two years ago. It's just starting to come back, and it will still expand, he said.

A Singular Vision

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is widely considered to produce some of the world's greatest Chardonnay. Currently managed by fourth generation family member Dominique Lafon, who inherited the winery from his father René in the mid 1980s, Comtes Lafon own and source fruit from many of the greatest cru in the region - including Charmes, Clos de la Barre and Montrachet.

Dominique pursued a policy of converting all vineyards under Comtes Lafon's stewardship over to traditional farming methods - moving first to fully organic in 1995 and on to biodynamic in 1998. The average age of vines is around 40 years with yields kept low to ensure quality. Alongside his world class Chardonnay, Dominique also produces Premier Cru Volnay in limited quantities - a relatively new addition to the winery's portfolio, they are swiftly gaining a cult following.
