The history of Maison Vincent Girardin is relatively recent; when in 1980, at the age of 19, Vincent Girardin, the son of a family of winegrowers based in Santenay since the 17th Century, decided to strike out on his own. Girardin began producing wine from two hectares of vines that he had inherited from his parents. The quality of his wines was quickly recognized by connoisseurs all over the world, and this enabled him to expand his activity, focusing primarily on the great white and red wines of the Côte de Beaune. This mature 2003 Volnay Les Santenots reveals spicy notes on the nose. Pretty red cherry fruit in the mouth, enhanced by notes of sweet spices such as cinnamon. This charming wine presents a beautiful mouthfeel, with a lot of volume. Opulent and complex on the palate.

Good full red. Roasted meat, smoke, leather and game on the nose. Chewy and solid, with a Pommard-like rusticity. Flavors of roasted red berries, chocolate and meat. Finishes with building tannins and lingering spice. (My first sample of the Corton Vieilles Vignes was obviously corked, and the second was slightly musty. My bottle of Echezeaux was too reduced to assess.)Stephen Tanzer1st March 2006
