Virginie de Valandraud 2009 is a full-bodied, Merlot-based red wine from the St-Émilion appellation of Bordeaux. Virginie de Valandraud is the second wine of the highly acclaimed Château Valandraud and was first produced in 1992. Though grown and vinified in exactly the same way as the grand vin, it is made from younger vine fruit and, due to its slightly different blend, has developed its own identity. " The Virginie has a very opulent but "controlled" bouquet that does not get carried away with itself. Blackberry, macerated black cherries, a touch of boysenberry and noticeable vanillary that at least does not smother its definition. The palate if full-bodied with ripe, slightly chewy tannins, moderate acidity, very pure with a rounded, supple finish of blackberry, pomegranate and a hint of white pepper. Nicely focused." Good deep ruby-red. Musky aromas of chocolate, coffee and sexy oak. Supple and moderately deep, with good lift to the plum, mocha and floral flavors. Finishes with enticing lingering sweetness.Stephen Tanzer1st July 2012
