La Grande Dame showcases the House’s excellence, perfectly expressing its love for Pinot Noir. A tribute to Madame Clicquot and the creative and elegant souls who have followed in her footsteps, this wine is in the image of La Grande Dame herself. For the House of Veuve Clicquot, La Grande Dame 1990 is the champagne of the millennium, launched in 1999 to inaugurate the 2000s. Offering highly expressive toasted smoky opening notes. gunflint, coffee and crusty bread. Subtle nut aromas follow. hazelnuts and roasted cashews. The unique complexity of this wine is then rounded off by luxuriously warm notes of wax, honey and even vanilla. A rich and well-defined structure on the palate, making this an ample and generous wine with a long and expressive finish. Offered here in luxurious magnum format.

I highly recommend the Veuve Clicquot 1990 La Grande Dame. It is exquisitely rich and accessible, yet bursting with potential.

The 1990 La Grande Dame is a shock to the palate after all the older wines in this tasting. Candied lemon, rosemary, dried flowers and spices are all super-expressive in the glass. The 1990 retain a good bit of brightness, especially for its age. The citrus flavors have still not moved into realm or more orangish tonalities, as is likely to happen over time. The 1990 can be enjoyed now and for the next 20 years or so. Antonio Galloni1st November 2015

The 'Grande Dame' of Champagne

Founded in Reims in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is one of the largest Champagne houses. The famous Madame Clicquot is credited with many innovations during her tenure as head of the house in the early 1800s - introducing vintage-dated Champagne, inventing the process of riddling to ensure a clearer wine and developing the rosé Champagne produced through blending. Madame Clicquot is also credited with helping to popularise Champagne with high society in Europe during the Napoleonic wars.

The non-vintage is fresh and crisp with ripe fruit balancing citrussy zing while the vintage offerings are richer, fuller and more complex with notes of toasted brioche, almond and crushed green apple. La Grande Dame is the house's prestige cuvée - made only in exceptional years, the Champagne is produced using wines selected from Veuve Clicquot's Grand Cru vineyard holdings.
