La Grande Dame is the most prestigious cuvée in Veuve Clicquot`s portfolio. It is produced as a tribute to the remarkable Madame Clicquot, also known as the ‘Grande Dame of Champagne’, who played a pivotal role in shaping the success and legacy of the House. Aged for a minimum of 7 years before being released, La Grande Dame is known for its elegant and complex flavour profile, featuring notes of citrus, white flowers, and brioche.

The 2015 La Grande Dame is superb. Bright and vibrant in the glass, it impresses with its energy and focus. The 2015 packs a lot of intensity in its medium-bodied frame. Tasted after the 2012, the 2015 has a bit less body in the mid-palate but more explosive energy leading into the finish. Pear, white flowers, crushed rocks and slate lend tons of character. The 2015 points to the more modern style of Grande Dame today, now that the Pinots are increasingly sourced from cooler, north-facing sites.

The 2015 Brut La Grande Dame is turning out well today, evoking aromas of spring blossom, spring flowers, lemon oil, spices and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, elegant and seamless, it has a deep core of fruit with a lively spine of acidity and a saline, mineral finish. - Yohan Castaing

Disgorged October 2021. Tasted blind.Rich nose. Big bubbles. Loose and lacy and toffee-caramel sweetness. Big and round and almost a gentle giant, but there is plenty of power and structure packed into the acidity. Grapefruit and bitter apples. Then sweet, ripe apples. Caramel creamy. Cuboid structure and cuboid in the way it fills the mouth. Yet the finish is rounded and gentle, flashing with silver and gold threads. (TC)

The 'Grande Dame' of Champagne

Founded in Reims in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is one of the largest Champagne houses. The famous Madame Clicquot is credited with many innovations during her tenure as head of the house in the early 1800s - introducing vintage-dated Champagne, inventing the process of riddling to ensure a clearer wine and developing the rosé Champagne produced through blending. Madame Clicquot is also credited with helping to popularise Champagne with high society in Europe during the Napoleonic wars.

The non-vintage is fresh and crisp with ripe fruit balancing citrussy zing while the vintage offerings are richer, fuller and more complex with notes of toasted brioche, almond and crushed green apple. La Grande Dame is the house's prestige cuvée - made only in exceptional years, the Champagne is produced using wines selected from Veuve Clicquot's Grand Cru vineyard holdings.
