Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 2003 represents the second wine from the esteemed Vega Sicilia estate, established in 1864 in Ribera del Duero, Spain. This vintage offers a nuanced profile with earthy aromas intertwined with hints of dark berries and subtle spices. The palate reveals layered flavours of ripe black cherry, plum and a touch of leather, all underpinned by fine tannins. The wine demonstrates finesse and a certain restraint, providing a complex yet harmonious experience. Valbuena 5 consistently reflects the estate`s commitment to quality and craftsmanship in winemaking.

Deep ruby. Intensely perfumed aromas of smoky cherry and cured meat, complemented by vanillin oak, baking spices and dried rose. Chewy red berry and cherry flavors are firmed by dusty tannins and given lift by a jolt of tangy minerality. Picks up bitter cherry skin and pit on the long, refreshingly juicy finish. No way I'd have guessed this to have come from a hot vintage.

Spain's 'First Growth'

Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend.

The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. Valbuena 5 is the estate's 'entry level' wine, a five year aged Tempranillo. Alongside Vega Sicilia, the same team also manage Bodegas Alion in Ribera del Duero and Bodegas Pintia in Toro.
