Vega Sicilia Unico 2000 is a mature Tempranillo-based red wine produced in the Ribera del Duero region of Spain. Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who established the vineyards with cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec taken from the vineyards of Bordeaux. The estate planted Tempranillo alongside these Bordelais varietals, which now makes up the majority of the modern Vega Sicilia blend. The flagship wines are Unico and Unico Reserva Especial - the former is aged for 10 years before release while the latter is a blend of only the finest vintages. "The 2000 Unico is deep crimson-coloured with an ethereal perfume aided by its extended upbringing. Aromas of Asian spices, lavender, incense, truffle, and confiture of black fruits are compelling. Sweet, forward, rich, and hedonistic, it nevertheless has the balance and structure to continue evolving for another 5-10 years. In strong vintages Vega Sicilia drinks well at age 50 and I would expect the same of the 2000." Wine Advocate, 2011
The 2000 Unico, a blend of 93% Tinto Fino and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, is very seductive aromatically, displaying wild strawberry tinged with eucalyptus, primal yet sensual. The oak that always cloaks Unico in its flush of youth is now assimilated. The palate is pliant, yet you immediately recognise that this millennial has plenty of gas in the tank. More blue fruit tinged with blood orange emerges towards the creamy-textured finish. Gorgeous, for sure, but personally, I would afford it several more years in bottle. Neal Martin12th June 2025

Not generally reckoned a great vintage in the way of 2004 and 2005. 2000 called for viticultural and winemaking skill. 40% of the crop was discarded. Untimely rain. Needs more time.Crimson with some evolution at the rim. Not that expressive on the nose. Concentrated and a bit medicinal but marked by quite high acidity and rather awkward tannins. A bit gawky at the moment. Fresh finish. (JR)
