The 2008 Valpolicella Superiore from Dal Forno Romano is a full-bodied red wine from Veneto, primarily crafted from Corvina, Corvina Grossa and Rondinella grapes. The wine showcases a dense crimson hue, suggesting its concentrated character. Aromas of dark cherry, herbal notes and subtle hints of tobacco emerge on the nose. On the palate, it presents a structured profile with layered fruit and a notable savoury quality, framed by moderate tannins. The wine`s complexity hints at potential for further ageing. Dal Forno Romano operates a mere 12.5 hectares in the Lodoletta area, known for its low yields and high-quality production.

A dark, super-ripe wine, the 2008 Valpolicella Superiore is fabulous in this vintage. Smoke, tar, incense, licorice and blackberry jam hit the palate in a massive, intense Valpolicella loaded with class and personality. Even with all of the concentration, the 2008 is quite a bit less tannic than some recent vintages have been, which makes it accessible even today, especially if given a little air. There is a lot to admire in this drop-dead gorgeous Valpolicella from Romano Dal Forno.Antonio Galloni1st March 2014

A Master Craftsman

A living legend of Verona winemaking, Romano Dal Forno has been producing showstopping Amarones and Valpolicellas since the early 1980s. A protégé of the great Giuseppe Quintarelli, Romano is renowned for his scrupulously hardworking commitment to his craft, both in the vineyard and the cellar.

The estate of Dal Forno Romano comprises 8ha of vineyards in the Val D’Illasi. The area’s loose, alluvial soils, combined with Dal Forno’s strict pruning regime, produce remarkably low grape yields. Rigorous selection during harvest then gives the raw materials for some of the most expressive Valpolicella Superiore, Amarone and passito wines in the region. Four decades on from the founding of the estate, Dal Forno Romano is still run by the family, with Romano’s son Marco in charge in the cellar and Romano himself always on hand.
