Purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, Château Trotanoy has been considered one of the premier crus of Pomerol since the end of the eighteenth century. The 2000 vintage is beautifully complex, boasting dark fruits and earthy maturity.
92 Vinous
The 2000 Trotanoy has a deeper hue than the 1996 and 1997 served alongside, as you would expect. This has an intense nose, with menthol-tinged black fruit, good definition and a touch of hung game that ebbs away to reveal more melted tar aromas. There is a little more VA than I would like. The palate is medium-bodied with layered sweet black licorice-tinged fruit. This builds nicely in the glass with hints of cassis and espresso on the finish. The 2000 does not have the natural "fluidity" of a great Trotanoy, but it should give another decade of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the Pomerol dinner at Cornus in London.

Rich and meaty nose. Thick and dense. Ripe and luscious eventually. Maybe just a little stolid to enjoy for the moment. (JR)

Chateau Trotanoy
World Class Pomerol
One of Pomerol's leading estates, Trotanoy was purchased by the Mouiex family in the mid-1950s. Farming around eight hectares of vines around a kilometre away from Petrus, the Trotanoy plantings are 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc on clay and gravel soils. The grapes are hand-harvested before being pressed and fermented in concrete vats. Maturation takes place in oak barriques, around 75% of which are new, for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered.
The wine's bold, concentrated style is a favourite with critics and connoisseurs alike with The Wine Advocate's Robert Parker dubbing Trotanoy "one of my favourite estates".
