80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc. Tenuta Tignanello is situated between the Greve and Pesa valleys in the heart of Chianti Classico. The Antinori family have been producing wine in Tuscany for six centuries, and exporting it for four. The purchase of the Tignanello estate in 1900 marked the beginning of a remarkable period of expansion which shows no signs of abating. A powerful Tignanello, the 2011 offers a combination of ripe, dark fruit and an underlying freshness, reflecting the vintage conditions. Plum and cherries mingle with mint and liquorice, creating a vivid, harmonious balance from the first impression through to the long, savoury finish.

(80% sangiovese, 15% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc): Medium red. Slightly reduced aromas of candied raspberry, ripe dark cherry, coffee and underbrush, accented by peppery herbs and spices. Enters the mouth full and ripe, then turns leaner and tougher, with juicy red berry and spice flavors framed by soft acidity. Clearly a warm-vintage wine, offering only modest complexity and depth for Tignanello, with a slightly overripe red fruit character. A wine I usually quite like, this strikes me as being one of the less memorable Tignanellos made. The long finish hints at subtle fruit and soft acidity.Ian d'Agata1st September 2014

Slick, internationally styled soft red fruit with a hint of oak, and an appetising, tangy finish. (WS)

An Antinori Icon

While technically a wine rather than a winery, Marchesi Antinori's flagship red wine, Supertuscan Tignanello, has become an icon in its own right. Produced from the Tignanello estate, this wine is one of Italy’s most recognized and celebrated fine wines. Tignanello is a blend of mostly Sangiovese wines with lesser parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, showcasing the Antinori family's mastery in winemaking.

Situated in the heart of Chianti Classico, in the gently rolling hillsides between the Greve and Pesa river valleys, the Tenuta Tignanello vineyard produces these influential wines. Tignanello was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first contemporary red wine blended with untraditional varieties (specifically Cabernet), and one of the first red wines in the Chianti Classico region not to use white grapes. This innovation has made it a modern red wine that stands out among its peers.

The Antinori estate also produces a superb Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon Grappa, a full-bodied Bordeaux-style red called Guado al Tasso, and delicate yet refined white wines from Castello della Sala, adding to its portfolio of iconic wines. The legacy of the Antinori family is evident in every bottle of these exceptional Italian wines.
