Manual harvest and selection of the grapes; gentle whole cluster pressing and clarification of the must by natural sedimentation; slow fermentation at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks with malolactic fermentation and aging on the lees in big wooden barrels for 12 months; further aging on the lees in steel tanks without filtering or fining for eleven years. Bottled in August 2023, with only 3,300 bottles being produced.

The wine exhibits an intensive light straw yellow colour with delicate greenish reflections On the nose, this Rarity wine captivates with a combination of extreme complexity and impressive freshness: noble aromas of white flowers, chamomile, some white peach paired with restrained mineral notes reminiscent of flint. On the palate, the wine impresses with a grippy, compact yet supple structure. Its distinctive texture generates an infinitely long finish, with enormous tension and salty minerality.

A wine to enjoy now or cellar for over 10 years.

This is the current vintage, with only 3,320 bottles released. The Cantina Terlano 2012 Alto Adige Terlano Pinot Bianco Rarity starts on a dry note and offers a very minerally bouquet with crushed oystershell and dusty gravel. I tasted this vintage next to the fruitier and more exuberant 2013 vintage, and the main difference between the two is the stony side, which is so enhanced here. But this wine also holds back a bit to remain subtle and elegant overall. Fruit comes from southwestern exposures on steep slopes at 550 to 600 meters in elevation. Winemaker Rudi Kofler says that 2012 made structured reds and whites. Dry winter months led to water stress that resulted in loose clusters after flowering. Yields were reduced in this vintage by 15%. The growing season saw a good mix of rain days and sunny days. Fruit performed very well in the highest elevations, where the late-ripening plots are located.

Very small berries and small crop. RS 1.5 g/l, TA 6.1 g/l. Bottled 22 August, 3,320 bottles produced.Floral nose and creamier than the 2013. Grip again and excellent acidity. Not quite as long as the 2013. Great presence. (JR)

Cantina Terlan

Traditional wines from Alto Adige

Established in 1893, Cantina Terlano has grown to become one of South Tyrol’s most respected wine cooperatives, now comprising 143 dedicated growers. Since the beginning, both the winery and its members have pursued an unwavering commitment to quality, a reputation that has earned Cantina Terlano widespread acclaim both in Italy and across international markets.

Despite its modest size, the estate has firmly secured its place among the world’s notable wine producers. Today, the winery produces a range of wines, with approximately 70% white and 30% red. A significant cellar expansion in 2009 increased storage capacity to 18,000 cubic metres, allowing wines to mature in optimal conditions. Architecturally, the building blends seamlessly with the landscape, featuring a red porphyry façade, echoing the unique soils of the region, and a vineyard-planted rooftop.

Wines are released under two main categories: the classic range and the premium Selections, along with a rare release aged for a decade or more—an exceptional expression of the estate’s dedication to longevity and refinement.
