The Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Magnum 2004 is a noteworthy example of a Blanc de Blancs Prestige Cuvée, made exclusively from 100% Chardonnay grapes sourced from premium Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs. This vintage benefited from a warm growing season, resulting in a balanced expression of the terroir. Taittinger, established in 1734, is known for its commitment to quality and tradition, often utilising lengthy lees ageing in their Gallo-Roman chalk cellars. The Magnum format allows for an extended maturation process, contributing to its complexity, while the fine bubbles and precise finish reflect the craftsmanship behind this Champagne.

The 2004 Comtes de Champagne is at a glorious peak of early maturity where the first notes of aromatic and flavor development have arrived, and yet the wine remains fresh. Apricot, baked apple tart, pastry and touch of reduction all run through this super-classic Comtes de Champagne. Now showing the gentlest hint of patina, the 2004 is magnificent. The delicately saline finish is a thing of beauty. At the outset, many Chefs de Cave believed the 2004s would not age, since at the time, yields were the highest ever in Champagne. Time has proved otherwise for the top wines. This is a great bottle of the 2004, the best I have had yet. Antonio Galloni26th March 2024

A Family Business

The Taittinger family have been running their eponymous Champagne house since 1932. One of the last family-owned houses in Reims, the brand has a reputation for quality-driven vintage and non-vintage Champagnes. Sourcing fruit from over 35 vineyards sites, the team produce a range of styles including an elegant non-vintage, two sweeter Champagnes in the form of Nocturne and Demi-Sec and a Grand Cru-based non-vintage.

The Taittinger family's Prestige Cuvée is Comtes de Champagne, first produced in 1952. This Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) is produced using fruit from five different Grand Cru sites across the Côte de Blancs. An aromatic, full-bodied Champagne with notes of citrus oil and green apple in youth, Comtes de Champagne ages superbly, with time in the bottle revealing notes of toasted hazelnut and a creamy richness.
