Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. 2005 was a landmark vintage for the estate as they produced one of their greatest ever wines, indicating a considerable step up in quality and starting a run of exceptional releases. Though still with plenty of further potential development, this is a wonderfully intense, complex and elegant wine.

The 2020 Smith Haut Lafitte has a glorious, complex bouquet that has evolved very well in barrel. Beautifully-defined with blackberry, peony, sous-bois and crushed stone, very precise and detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy, succulent tannins matched by a countervailing bead of acidity. Very detailed with a judicious touch of white pepper towards the finish that fans out extremely well. This is a deeply impressive Smith Haut Lafitte that is one of the Cathiard`s finest in recent years. - Neil Martin

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
