Nestled in the heart of Pessac-Léognan, Château Smith Haut Lafitte has been under the stewardship of the Cathiard family since 1990, transforming the estate into a beacon of innovation and quality. The 1998 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is a blend of around 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon. This vintage was aged in French oak barrels, with approximately half being new, imparting subtle complexity without overshadowing the fruit. On the nose, it reveals vibrant grapefruit aromas, leading to a fat and rich palate balanced by refreshing acidity.

The estate`s dedication to organic practices, fully embraced since 2019, underscores their commitment to sustainability and excellence. The 1998 Blanc stands as a testament to the château`s ability to craft white wines of depth and elegance, offering a multi-layered experience that continues to evolve gracefully with time.

Reticent nose hints at peach, apricot, lemon and a hint of waxy semillon. Supple, fat and spicy, with enticing sweetness; comes across as less vibrant today than the '99, which is not normally the case with white Graves.

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
