Situated in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, Château Smith Haut Lafitte boasts a rich Bordeaux heritage, tracing back to 1365. The property found new stewards in 1990 when former ski champions Daniel and Florence Cathiard acquired it, igniting a period of revitalization and renewed passion. The 2005 vintage is an incredibly well made Bordeaux, full of classic cassis, forest floor and black fruit notes. The tannins are still noticeable but very fine and smooth.

Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Smith Haut-Lafitte has an intriguing bouquet with surprising mineral intensity coming through the pure blackberry and cassis fruit. The oak here is beautifully assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a keen line of acidity, quite structured in the mouth, but that mineralité continues right to the finish that attenuates ever such a little. This is a thoroughbred Pessac-Léognan for the vintage. Tasted January 2016.Neal Martin30th May 2016

Full red-ruby. Expressive nose offers plum, black raspberry, tobacco, mocha, truffle, licorice and herbs. Suave, fine-grained and vibrant; generous and plush yet light on its feet. Finishes very long and classy, with sweet tannins, terrific energy and palate-coating persistence and perfume. Not as fat or full as the 2005, but just a step behind that wine.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2009

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
