Smith Haut Lafitte 1989 is a traditional Bordeaux blend from the Pessac-Léognan region. This mature vintage comprises a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 1989 growing season was distinguished by warmth, fostering concentration in the grapes. The nose offers evolved notes of tobacco, cedar, leather and dried plum, reflecting the wine`s age and tertiary development. On the palate, the wine presents a full-bodied structure with integrated tannins, revealing an earthy character intermixed with hints of dark chocolate.
81 Robert Parker
The 1989 is an example of a wine with a delicate, fruity character that was overwhelmed by the excessive use of new oak. The flavors of oak have crushed much of the wine`s finesse and elegance. Anticipated maturity. Now-1997. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
