The Sine Qua Non Ode to E Grenache 2004 is a blend composed of 88% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 2% Viognier. As with some of their other wines, the small percentage of Viognier is co-fermented with the red grapes to enhance the wine’s complexity and aromatic profile. On the nose, expect red and black fruits, such as raspberries, black cherries and blackberries, along with hints of white pepper, garrigue and lavender. On the palate, this Grenache is full-bodied, rich, and concentrated, displaying a velvety texture, vibrant acidity and well-integrated tannins.

The 2004 Grenache Ode to E is absolutely stellar. There's not too much more to say. Still young, fresh and vibrant, the 2004 is incredibly impressive. Exotic spice, rose petals, raspberry jam all open up in an effortless, nuanced wine bursting at the seams with personality. Exquisitely nuanced and balanced, the 2004 is a gem. Readers who own the 2004 should be thrilled; as it is a magnificent wine by any measure. My favorite age to drink Sine Qua Non wines is around ten years. The Ode to E Grenache delivers the goods, and then some. The blend is 88% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 2% Viognier, all from Eleven Confessions.Antonio Galloni1st August 2015

A blend of 88% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 2% Viognier, the 2004 Ode to E Grenache is entirely made from fruit from the Krankls’ Eleven Confessions Vineyard. Sporting a medium garnet color, it strides confidently out of the glass with tertiary notes of cigar box, iron-rich soil, smoked meats, and sautéed herbs, giving way to a core of preserved plums and baked blackberries with a touch of crushed rocks. The full-bodied palate maintains great tension with taut, muscular fruit, chewy tannins, and savory/earthy layers, finishing long and minerally. Interestingly, the brix at harvest was 25.9 to 26.9, yet the pH at harvest was amazingly low for this level of ripeness— 3.28 to 3.44. (The final pH is 3.52 with an ABV of 16.2%.). This no doubt lends to that exhilarating feeling of tension in the mouth and that sense of freshness as it approaches the 20-year mark. Superb. 260 cases and 130 magnums were made.Lisa Perrotti-Brown4th September 2024

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
