Sine Qua Non is a highly sought-after and prestigious winery located in Ventura County. Founded in 1994 by Manfred Krankl and his wife Elaine, this boutique producer has gained a cult following for its exceptional and limited-edition Rhône-style wines. The Sine Qua Non Next of Kyn XI 2017 is the eleventh release in the Next of Kyn series and it is a blend of 48% Syrah, 24.8% Grenache, 12.7% Mourvèdre, 10.6% Petite Syrah, 2.2% Petit Manseng and 1.7% Roussanne, done with about 23% whole clusters. The 2017 vintage in California was characterized by a warm and dry growing season, with some regions affected by heatwaves and wildfires. Despite the challenges, many wineries managed to produce high-quality wines with concentrated flavours.

The 2017 No. 11 Cumulus Vineyard has turned out beautifully. Silky and opulent, with tremendous depth, the 2017 captures all the best qualities of this site. Black cherry, mocha, leather, licorice and spice build as the 2017 shows off its allure, which is considerable. This exotic, opulent wine has so much to offer. The 2017 was done with 23% whole clusters and spent 32 months in French oak, 68% new. Antonio Galloni1st October 2021

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
