Sine Qua Non is a highly acclaimed California winery known for producing limited-production, highly sought-after wines. Founded by winemaker Manfred Krankl and his wife Elaine, the winery gained a cult-like following for its innovative winemaking techniques, artistic labels, and distinctive approach to winemaking. Like seemingly all SQN wines, the 2000 Incognito is powerful, big, dark and brooding but in perfect harmony and balance. Mostly Grenache, the wine explodes from the glass with notes of kirsch, dark berries, spice, chocolate and minerals. Presented here in a fabulous magnum bottle.
92 Vinous
(15.7% alcohol; 90% grenache and 10% syrah) Saturated ruby-red. Exotic aromas of liqueur-like red fruits, spice cake, chocolate, gunflint, bonfire, walnut and scotch. Sweet, thick and creamy, with rather wild, deep flavors of raspberry, blackberry, flint and minerals. Almost too much, yet this lush, superripe wine somehow avoids coming off as heavy. This has wonderful fruit and length, finishing with thoroughly ripe, sweet tannins. In style, this is very much like a top Chateauneuf du Pape from a very ripe year.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2003

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
