Incognito Grenache 2000 is a rare bottling from the iconic Sine Qua Non estate, representing Manfred Krankl’s unconventional approach to winemaking. This 2000 vintage is a blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah, sourced from top-tier Central Coast vineyards. Known for its massive concentration and hedonistic profile, the wine offers decadent layers of kirsch, lavender and roasted herbs, supported by a high-alcohol but surprisingly seamless structure. At over 20 years of age, it has developed complex secondary notes of leather and forest floor while maintaining its signature velvety texture. It is an idiosyncratic California red, reflecting the bold, rule-breaking spirit that has made this producer a global cult phenomenon.
92 Vinous
(15.7% alcohol; 90% grenache and 10% syrah) Saturated ruby-red. Exotic aromas of liqueur-like red fruits, spice cake, chocolate, gunflint, bonfire, walnut and scotch. Sweet, thick and creamy, with rather wild, deep flavors of raspberry, blackberry, flint and minerals. Almost too much, yet this lush, superripe wine somehow avoids coming off as heavy. This has wonderful fruit and length, finishing with thoroughly ripe, sweet tannins. In style, this is very much like a top Chateauneuf du Pape from a very ripe year.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2003

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
