Sine Qua Non is the creation of pioneering winemaker, Manfred Krankl, and is a world-famous cult winery revered for producing miniscule quantities of unique Rhône-inspired wines from some of the greatest vineyards across the Central Coast. This is an incredibly rare 3-litre bottling of the highly acclaimed 2000 ‘In Flagrante’ Syrah. This is a seductive and seamless wine with oodles of rich black fruits, complemented by wonderfully perfumed notes of dried violet flowers, peppery spice and woodsmoke.
97 The Wine Independent
The 2000 In Flagrante is a blend of 88% Syrah, 10% Grenache, and 2% Viognier. The fruit sources are 51% Alban Vineyard, 20% Bien Nacido Vineyard, 17% Stolpman Vineyard, and 12% White Hawk Vineyard. The juice was fermented in small, open-top fermenters using indigenous yeast with manual punch-downs. The wine was aged for 19 months in oak barrels, 72% new, of which 10% was American oak, 5% was Russian, and the rest French.
Medium to deep garnet in color with a hint of brick at the rim, it needs a lot of swirling to coax out expressive notes of plum preserves, cigar box, fruit cake, and iron ore, soon revealing a complex array of sandalwood, spice cake, dried roses, and caraway. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers wonderful freshness and tension with plush tannins and a fireworks display of flavors, finishing with great length and depth.Lisa Perrotti-Brown4th September 2024

(14.9% alcohol; a blend of 88% syrah, 10% grenache and 2% viognier) Vivid, deep ruby-red. Knockout nose combines roasted cherry, gunflint, smoked meat and mint. Fat, sweet and lush, with compelling concentration and sweetness of fruit. As pliant and generous as this is, it's also vibrant and firm. Finishes extremely long and ripely tannic, with superb lingering sweetness. A great California syrah, with very subtle oakiness for a red from this producer.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2003

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
