Sean Thackrey Orion Syrah 2008 is a Napa red wine that originates from a unique field blend vineyard. While often referred to as a Syrah, it is famously a field blend from a very old vineyard, planted in 1905, that contains at least 11 different grape varieties, some of which are still unidentified, though Syrah is the dominant component. The 2008 vintage was generally good in California, allowing for ripe and expressive wines. This wine offers a complex aromatic profile of dark fruit, black liquorice, black olives, pepper and earthy notes, with hints of camphor and eucalyptus. On the palate, it is known for its extracted yet balanced nature, with big body, dark fruit flavours and firm, well-structured tannins that allow for significant ageing.
95 Robert Parker
Marching to the beat of a drummer largely unknown to any other winemaker in California, Sean Thackerey continues to produce some extraordinary wines, in this case from a field blend planted in 1905. This is clearly a Rhone Ranger blend, with a dense ruby/purple color and loads of incense, camphor, blue and black fruits, earth, and spice. Full-bodied, rich, and bursting with personality, the wine is unique/singular, with an intensity that has to be tasted to be believed. Drink it over the next decade or more. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.
