The Screaming Eagle 1998 is a rare Cabernet Sauvignon from one of Napa Valley`s most esteemed producers, known for its meticulous vineyard practices. The cooler conditions of the 1998 vintage presented challenges, but Screaming Eagle`s attention to detail ensured a focused expression. This wine features aromatics of blackcurrant, dark cherry and hints of spice, alongside earthy undertones. On the palate, it delivers a layered experience with a balanced interplay of fruit and tannins, supported by a notable acidity.

Good medium ruby. Aromas of cassis, redcurrant, cocoa powder and tobacco, with a vegetal trace in the background. Focused and precise in the mouth, with lovely texture and sweetness. Notes of blueberry and tobacco. Finishes juicy and long. With extended aeration, this impeccably made wine showed richer aromas of black raspberry and mocha, and a fatter texture, with strong but harmonious acidity enabling the wine to maintain its shape. Certainly one of the half-dozen strongest cabernet-based wines from this difficult vintage.Stephen Tanzer1st November 2001

Screaming Eagle

An Iconic Cult Cabernet

An almost mythical name in the wine world, particularly among connoisseurs of fine Californian Cabernet Sauvignon. Screaming Eagle had relatively modest beginnings - in the early 1990s, grape grower Jean Philips decided to ask Robert Mondavi to taste her homemade Cabernet Sauvignon. Mondavi was so enamoured with the dense, full-flavoured Cabernet Sauvignon she presented that he encouraged her to bottle it as soon as possible. The high quality of the wine, perfect scores from critics and tiny production meant it swiftly became the holy grail for American wine collectors.

The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard at Screaming Eagle benefits from a rocky substrate and excellent drainage and exposure. The result is fruit that gets plenty of sun to ripen, but a cooling northerly breeze courtesy of the San Pablo Bay. The wines are made in a bold, rich, unapologetically Californian style. Blackcurrent, cigar box, blackerries and violets abound on the nose while the tannins are soft and fine-grained. The estate also produce a second wine, "Second Flight" and a tiny amount Sauvignon Blanc.
